FAQ's

Who is Eligible?

The Sherwood Park Northstars Football Club is available to boys and girls who are between the age of 10 and 15 years of age as of December 31 of the current football season.

Our Peewee program starts at 10 years of age and goes until 12 years of age. Our Bantam program starts at 13 years of age and goes until 15 years of age as long as the 15 year old will not be going into grade 10 in September.

We play in the Capital District Minor Football Association (CDMFA). Our team boundaries encompass Sherwood Park and most of the populated area of the County of Strathcona south of Highway 16. We can also accommodate players from outside these boundaries, provided that they do not live in an area that falls within another CDMFA team's jurisdiction. The exception to this rule is that you can ask that the Northstars request a release from a team within whose boundaries you live. This release, if a pproved, will then allow you to become a Northstar. CDMFA will make the final decision on whether or not player releases are approved.

How much does it cost to play?

Please see our registration page for an outline of all required fees.

During the course of the year, there may be some additional costs related to the team that are not outlined as part of registration. These include things like Spirit packs (game socks, practice shorts, etc. - to be determined by coach), personal equipment (see below), year-end banquet, or other similar player related costs. We strive to make membership on our team affordable to all families.

Where are we located?

We practice at the Ardrossan Junior/Senior High School field (53129 Range Road 222;Ardrossan, AB) Our clubhouse is located behind the school near the track.

When do practices & games take place?

Our season runs from May to November (there is NO football played in July)

Practices run from May - June and September -  November. Typically we will practice 2-3 times a week from 6-8 PM. Practice dates will be posted on our Schedules (respective to each level) Each Head Coach determines practice frequency and times, occasionally they may require additional times outside of regularly schedule practices.

Games are played on either Saturdays or Sundays, beginning in Mid-August.

What equipment is required?

Almost all football equipment is provided by the Sherwood Park Northstars.

Personal items that must be provided by players includes:

  • mouth guard
  • cleats
  • girdle
  • gloves (for some positions - optional)
  • athletic shorts
  • knee pads (if players choose NOT to wear practice pants)

Why are there fundraising fees? What fundraising is required?

Football clubs in Sherwood Park operate as independent clubs and are responsible for all their own costs like; equipment, clubhouses, field rentals, transportation, etc. Fundraising obligations are determine each year by the Sherwood Park Northstars Football Club Executive Board and include, but are not limited to bottle drives, Pub Night & Silent Auction, meat sales and ravine clean-up. The Sherwood Park Northstars Football Club rely on volunteer commitments for fundraising initiatives over the course of the entire season. We communicate in advance to our families which events are taking place. Volunteer commitment cheques are cashed when families cannot participate in fundraising activities.

Can my child play for the Northstars if we live out of boundaries?

Each team in CDMFA is allowed 3 out-of-boundary players. The Sherwood Park Northstars Football Club President must make a formal request for a release and that release must be approved by CDMFA 1st. Parents may NOT apply for a release. More details can be found on the CDMFA website links below.
