Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The Northstars Bantam Football Program is available to boys and girls who are 13, 14, or 15 years of age as of December 31 of the current football season. Players must not be going into Grade 10 in September. Please see our Registration page for more details.

We play in the Capital District Minor Football Association. Our team boundaries encompass Sherwood Park and most of the populated area of the County of Strathcona south of Highway 16. We can also accommodate players from outside these boundaries, provided that they do not live in an area that falls within another CDMFA team’s jurisdiction. The exception to this rule is that you can ask that the Northstars request a release from the team within whose boundaries you live. This release, if approved, will then allow you to become a Northstar. CDMFA makes the final decision on whether or not player releases are approved.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PLAY?

Please see our registration page for an outline of all required fees. During the course of the year there may be some additional costs related to the team that are not outlined as part of registration. These include things like spirit packs (game socks, practice shorts, etc. – to be determined by coach), personal equipment (see below), year-end banquet, or other similar player related costs. We strive to make membership on our team affordable to all families.

WHERE ARE WE LOCATED?

We practice at the Ardrossan Junior/Senior High School field. (53129 Range Road 222, Ardrossan, AB) Our clubhouse is located behind the school near the track.

WHEN DO PRACTICES AND GAMES TAKE PLACE?

Our season runs from May – November. (There is NO football played in July) Practices run from May – June and September – November. Typically we will practice 2-3x/week from 4:30 – 6pm. Practices in August are 2-3x/week in the evenings. We will post practice dates on our Schedule page or on our News & Events page. Occasionally the coaches may require additional times outside of regularly scheduled practices. The Head Coach determines practice frequency and times. Games are played Saturdays or Sundays beginning in mid August.

WHAT EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED?

Almost all football equipment is provided by the Northstars. Personal items that must be provided by players include: mouth guard, cleats, girdle, gloves (for some positions – optional), athletic shorts and kneepads (if players choose not to wear practice pants).

* Each player receives ONE 2-year team jacket

WHY ARE THERE FUNDRAISING FEES? WHAT FUNDRAISING IS REQUIRED?

Bantam football clubs in Sherwood Park operate as independent clubs and are responsible for all their own costs like; equipment, clubhouses, field rentals, transportation, etc. Fundraising obligations are determined each year by the Northstar club executive and include, but are not limited to bottle drives, Pub Night & Silent Auction, Mundare sausage sales, and ravine clean. The Northstars rely on volunteer commitments for fundraising initiatives over the course of the season. We communicate in advance to our families which events are taking place. Volunteer commitment cheques are cashed when families cannot participate in fundraising activities. Please see the Registration page for details on cheque amounts and dates.

CAN MY CHILD PLAY FOR THE NORTHSTARS IF WE LIVE OUT OF BOUNDARIES?

Each team in the CDMFA bantam level is allowed 3 out of boundary players. The Northstars’ club president must make a formal request for a “release” and that release must be approved by the CDMFA first.  Parents may NOT apply for a release. More details can be found at the CDMFA website links below.
